Notes From Mr. Nasir
May 11th, 2012
This
will be my last regular Friday newsletter for the WMR1 Elementary School. As many of you may know our School Board has
offered me the opportunity to serve our district as superintendent for the
upcoming school year. I am most humbly
grateful for this opportunity and will do my utmost to validate the confidence
and trust the Board has placed in me. It
is my vision for the Wellsville-Middletown R-1 School District that we strive
to maintain our school as a bright beacon of academic excellence in the state
of Missouri. As we all know, a good education is the only sure path to a
successful adulthood. And with the ever
increasing rigor of the state and federal instructional standards and the
increasing complexity of everyday, modern living, providing an adequate
education for our students requires that our school continue to increase the
quality of its instructional process. I
believe our school has a dedicated and highly competent instructional and
support staff. I look forward to working
with all of them in conjunction with our Board, parents and community to
continue to provide the high quality education our students deserve.
Two important items about summer
school: The first is that we’re getting pretty full, but we still have some
room so feel free to register your child at any time. Remember, in the elementary school,
attendance in summer school is not mandatory, and though we’d rather a student
show up for every day, we realize that families have other summer activities
scheduled, so it is perfectly OK if a student signs up but can’t attend the
whole summer school session.
The second summer school item concerns
our Middletown bus. During summer school
we don’t provide our normal bus routes.
We do have a bus that picks up kids at a central location in
Middletown. This year that location will
be the parking lot of the new Baptist
Church in Middletown, located right there on Rt. 161. This bus will be
leaving the parking lot at 7:30am. so please have your
students at the parking lot by 7:25am. On behalf of the school I’d like to
extend my thanks to the Middletown Baptist congregation for allowing us to use
their parking lot. It is centrally
located and much safer for our students.
As a reminder, summer school starts on
Tuesday, May 29th and runs every week day through Monday, June 25th. Classes start at 8:00am and breakfast will be
available for summer school students from 7:30am to 8:00am. Kids that are not enrolled in summer school
but come to school for breakfast may eat at any time between 7:30am and
8:30am. We will ask all non-summer
school students to finish eating and leave the building no later than 8:30am.
51 of our 3rd thru 6th
grade students qualified for the year-end Homework Club roller-skating
extravaganza! These are kids who all
year long missed no more than one homework assignment in any given month. When you get a bunch of kids and turn them
loose with roller skates, foosball, air hockey, soda and popcorn…well, it sorta turns into a big party…go figure! Some of our kids are real pros on skates and
some are like me…they spent some time on their hands and knees. It’s just that kids are a lot more resilient
than old guys like me…they bounce instead of breaking. This year I chickened out of skating, I told
a couple of kids I didn’t want to make them look bad…a lie that they
immediately saw through! I did strut up
to the air-hockey table and got roundly thrashed by the sweetest most innocent
looking little air-hockey shark…I think I was hustled!
Speaking of the Homework Club, we had
two classes this month that had 100% participation…which won them a pizza party
for lunch. Both Mrs. Wilkinson’s 6th
grade class and Ms. Hampton’s 5th grade class accomplished this
feat! I need to make sure that everyone
knows that our WMR1 PTO provides the funding for all the Homework Club rewards,
including the monthly healthy treats, the pizza parties and the roller-skating
party. I’d like to thank the PTO for all
the wonderful things they do to support our kids, which, of course, means a big
thank-you to all of you in our community that supports the PTO’s fund raising
efforts.
Finally, the Human Resource Council of
Montgomery County will be holding their 6th annual Back-To-School
Fair on Monday, July 30th. It
will be at the Montgomery County R-2 Middle School this year. You have to be registered with them to attend
so if you’re interested call the NECAC office at 573-564-3606 to get registered
or for any other info that you need.
That’s it for this week.
